Glass Competence Center in Torgau Secures €34 Million Federal Funding

The Nordsachsen district in Torgau, Germany, is constructing a new Glass Competence Center to strengthen the region’s historic glass industry. The €34 million investment comes from the German Federal Structural Fund and will fund a 3,300‑square‑metre facility with a total floor area of 5,300 square metres.

Consulting firm Drees & Sommer SE is tasked with planning the equipment for the centre’s workshops and laboratories, which will support vocational training, research and pilot production of climate‑friendly glass technologies. The centre is slated to open in late 2027 and will integrate the local vocational school BSZ Nordsachsen, the GlasCampus Torgau concept, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, and regional glass manufacturers. It aims to address high energy costs, the transition to greener processes and the shortage of skilled workers in the European glass sector.

“​The glass industry urgently needs qualified professionals and technological advancement,” said Kai Emanuel, Landrat of Nordsachsen. The initiative is positioned as a model for combining education, research and industry to ensure the future competitiveness of the glass sector in Central Germany.
