Glasshouse Theatre opens at Queensland Performing Arts Centre
The Glasshouse Theatre has officially opened at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane, Australia, adding a fifth venue to the historic performing arts complex. Designed by Blight Rayner Architecture and Snøhetta, the facility features a distinctive wavy glass facade intended to convey the concept of illusion. The structure houses a primary 1,500-seat auditorium alongside two smaller spaces suitable for various performances, including ballet, opera, and concerts.
Due to site constraints, the design incorporates a vertical approach, with the stage tower and main auditorium housed within a concrete tower that extends above the existing complex. The project was completed by Lendlease and has achieved a 5 Star Green Star Design and As Built rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.
Sustainability measures during construction included the use of renewable electricity, a large battery system to power tower cranes, and renewable diesel for heavy lifting. The building utilizes cross-laminated timber, Queensland ironbark, water-efficient fixtures, and drought-tolerant landscaping to ensure long-term environmental performance.
