Glaucoma and cataract treatments evolve with minimally invasive options

Medical experts are highlighting the importance of early detection and advanced treatment options for glaucoma and cataracts, particularly as populations age. Glaucoma is often described as a ‘silent vision thief’ because it frequently presents no symptoms in its early stages, leading to irreversible optic nerve damage before patients notice vision loss.

Recent medical discussions emphasize that treatment is no longer limited to eye drops, lasers, or traditional surgery. For patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma who also require cataract surgery, doctors can now evaluate the use of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). This involves implanting a micro-drainage stent through the same incision used for cataract surgery to help regulate intraocular pressure, reducing the need for multiple procedures and long-term medication.

Physicians also stress the importance of post-operative care and lifestyle habits. Recommended eye care practices include the ‘20-30’ rule (taking breaks every 20-30 minutes when using screens), maintaining adequate lighting when using electronic devices at night, and protecting eyes from UV rays with sunglasses and hats. Ongoing monitoring and strict adherence to medication are essential to prevent further vision deterioration.
