Gülcan Ulu preserves traditional ebru art in Izmir
Gülcan Ulu, a painting teacher based in Izmir, is working to preserve the traditional art of ebru by teaching new generations through a modern approach. Recognized by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism as a Bearer of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Ulu operates a workshop in Çiğli where she provides instruction to students.
Ulu began her specialized training in Istanbul in 2015, spending five years mastering the craft before receiving her certification in 2020. Her curriculum begins with 'battal ebru' and progresses to more complex floral patterns. She describes the art form as a discipline that integrates both chemistry and mathematics, noting that every piece produced is unique.
Currently teaching 10 students, Ulu emphasizes that the art is suitable for all ages, from 7 to 70, provided the practitioner possesses patience and dedication. Beyond teaching, she exhibits her own works and those created by her students to keep the traditional art form alive.
