Glen Hansard's Dublin funeral draws thousands of mourners
Oscar‑winning Irish singer‑songwriter Glen Hansard, 56, died in a single‑vehicle motorcycle crash on 29 July 2026 on the outskirts of Dublin. His funeral was held on 4 August 2026 at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Thousands gathered inside the cathedral and many more queued outside to watch the service on large screens, while more than 40 000 people viewed a live‑stream online.
The ceremony featured tributes from leading musicians and actors. U2 frontman Bono recited lyrics from “Beautiful Day”, played a voicemail from Patti Smith and led a sing‑along. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder performed “Song of Good Hope” together with Hansard’s longtime musical partner Markéta Irglová. Other attendees included The Edge, Hozier, Steve Coogan, Chris O’Dowd, Imelda May and many others. Hansard’s widow, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, thanked the Gardaí, read a poem she had written for him and spoke of their three‑year‑old son Christy.
A public wake the day before at Dublin’s Irish Museum of Modern Art attracted over 11 000 visitors, underscoring the widespread affection for the artist who rose from Dublin’s streets to international acclaim through The Frames, The Swell Season and the Oscar‑winning song “Falling Slowly”.
