Glen Hansard dies in Dublin motorcycle crash, public wake and tributes follow
Irish singer‑songwriter Glen Hansard was killed on 29 July 2026, aged 56, after his motorcycle lost control near the Strawberry Beds area of Lucan, Dublin. Police investigators say the bike hit a soft roadside verge, causing it to flip; they have ruled out a collision with a tree.
A public wake was held on 3 August 2026 at the Baroque Chapel of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, where thousands queued to pay respects. The following day a public funeral took place at St Patrick’s Cathedral, with limited indoor capacity and a live stream for those unable to attend.
Tributes poured in from figures such as Bono, Bruce Springsteen, former U.S. President Barack Obama and many others. Director Jim Sheridan confirmed he had been working on a documentary about Hansard before the accident. Hansard is survived by his wife, poet Maire Saaritsa, and their son, Christy.
