Glen Powell’s ‘The Running Man’ fails to recoup $110 million budget
The 2025 film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, ‘The Running Man’, has been classified as a financial failure. Despite a budget of $110 million, the production led by Glen Powell earned only approximately $70 million at the global box office, failing to recoup production costs.
In an interview with Esquire, Glen Powell attributed the film’s poor performance to internal instability at Paramount Pictures. Following a merger with Skydance, the studio underwent significant restructuring, which included the dismissal of the entire marketing department just one month before the film’s release. This resulted in severely limited promotional capabilities.
Other contributing factors include a highly competitive holiday release window and a declining market interest in films centered on 1980s nostalgia. While the film received mixed critical reviews, with a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it is currently available on streaming platforms.
