Glen Schofield criticizes Krafton over The Callisto Protocol release

Game industry veteran Glen Schofield has criticized South Korean publisher Krafton regarding the development and release of The Callisto Protocol. Schofield claims that his studio, Striking Distance Studios, was forced to release the game in December 2022, despite a planned March 2023 launch. He stated that Krafton had originally promised an additional three months of development time but later rescinded that decision.

Schofield attributed several complications to Krafton's management, noting that the publisher lacked sufficient experience in releasing large-scale single-player games with physical components. He also noted that a requirement to release on PlayStation reportedly increased costs by $20 million.

Beyond management issues, the development process was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced a shift to remote work and disrupted team communication. Schofield, who recently left the gaming industry to pursue art, expressed frustration with the modern industry's focus on administrative processes and video conferencing over creative leadership.
