Glendale increases concealed carry permit fees

The city of Glendale, California, has announced a significant increase in fees for concealed carry weapon (CCW) permits. The initial application fee is set at $1,078, while renewals will cost $828.

When combined with mandatory costs for fingerprinting, a training course, and a psychological evaluation, the total expense for a new permit is estimated to reach at least $2,106. Second Amendment activists and the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) have suggested these high costs could trigger legal challenges.

The move follows recent litigation settlements between the Department of Justice and Los Angeles County regarding permit application handling. Legal experts point to a 2022 Supreme Court decision, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, noting that Justice Clarence Thomas previously indicated that exorbitant fees denying citizens their right to public carry could face constitutional scrutiny.
