GLIDE opens New Zealand’s first oil re-refinery in Pukekohe
GLIDE has opened New Zealand’s first oil re-refinery in Pukekohe, marking a shift in how the country manages automotive waste. The facility, representing a private investment of approximately $40 million, processes used engine oil collected from workshops, dealerships, and fleet operators nationwide.
Historically, waste engine oil in New Zealand has been burned for industrial heat. The new plant utilizes vacuum distillation to separate base oil from impurities, creating re-refined base oil (RRBO) that can be blended into new lubricants. This process aims to reduce the nation's reliance on imported products and recover valuable resources.
GLIDE estimates the operation could prevent up to 100,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, a figure independently verified by Toitū Envirocare. General manager John Knox stated that the plant allows oil to “become new oil again,” providing businesses with a way to improve emissions reporting and environmental impact.
