Glina opens Croatia’s first Anthem Square on city day

On Thursday, the town of Glina in Croatia inaugurated the first Trg hrvatske himne (Croatian Anthem Square) to mark the city’s day and the 180th anniversary of the national anthem’s composition. The square commemorates the 1846 setting of the melody by military officer Josip Runjanin in Glina, which later became the anthem “Lijepa naša domovino”.

Mayor Ivan Janković said the square symbolizes national unity and Glina’s historic link to the anthem, recalling the 1995 Operation Storm liberation of the town after four years of occupation. He described the space as a permanent gathering place for cultural events and a sign of Glina’s post‑war reconstruction and demographic renewal. “The anthem is a symbol of our statehood and unity,” he added.
