Gliwice architect renovates historic 1910 tenement apartment

An architect has designed a private residence within a semi-circular, corner tenement building dating back to 1910 in Gliwice, Poland. The project, led by Anna Berner Paluch of New Design, focuses on preserving the historical character of the Silesian building while integrating modern design elements.

The interior retains original features such as century-old brickwork, historic wooden flooring, high double-wing doors, and decorative stucco. A notable centerpiece is a vintage green tiled stove with Art Nouveau ornamentation. The design balances these historical details with contemporary touches, including industrial-style lighting, black metal accents, and a kitchen island finished with unique muscato root veneer.

While the project initially leaned toward a loft style, the final concept evolved into a fusion of industrial simplicity and the classical architecture of the old tenement. The renovation faced technical challenges, including managing existing plumbing and concealing a gas stove, but ultimately resulted in a space that highlights the building's original arches and monumental architecture.
