Globacom fuels Nigeria's May internet subscriber surge

Nigeria’s telecom market saw a strong increase in internet users in May, with Globacom adding about 1.2 million new subscribers and raising its base to roughly 16.8 million. The total internet subscriber count in the country grew from 154.3 million in April to 157 million in May, a rise of 2.67 million. Airtel Nigeria followed with an increase of about 1.07 million, while MTN Nigeria added 382,894 users. T2 Mobile recorded no growth for the second month in a row.

In parallel, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) issued a new Cyber Resilience Framework requiring all licensed telecom operators to allocate dedicated budgetary resources for cybersecurity. The directive, explained by NCC executive commissioner Abraham Oshadami, mandates formal governance structures, senior‑level oversight, and funding for risk assessments, security technologies, staff training and incident‑response capabilities to protect the sector’s infrastructure and customer data.
