Global advocacy groups call for improved support for aging populations
Organizations in Belize and Ghana are advocating for improved support systems for aging populations, centered around the theme ‘The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Better Lives.’
In Belize, HelpAge Belize concluded Elderly Week with various activities, including eye-care sessions and community gatherings in Belize City. The organization emphasized the necessity for enhanced healthcare, housing, and financial support to address the needs of the country’s growing senior population.
In Ghana, the health and policy advocacy group Blue Medics participated in the 2026 United Nations International Day of Older Persons commemoration in Akuapem North. Alongside the University of Ghana’s Centre for Ageing Studies, the event focused on ensuring that increased life expectancy is matched by dignity, health, and appropriate social support. Blue Medics provided medical services and health education, highlighting the importance of preventive healthcare as the population aged 60 and above continues to rise.
