Global African Hub debuts at Toronto International Film Festival
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has launched the Global African Hub, an initiative designed to increase the visibility of African narratives and cinema in North America. The hub is supported by Canex Creations, a subsidiary of Afreximbank’s Fund for Export Development in Africa.
During a market screening of the film ‘Muganga, the One Who Treats’, actors David Oyelowo and Danai Gurira joined Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege for a panel discussion. The film, starring Isaach de Bankolé, documents Dr. Mukwege’s work supporting women who have survived sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a conflict exacerbated by the global demand for cobalt.
Gurira and Oyelowo highlighted the importance of authentic portrayals of African experiences. Oyelowo specifically noted the profound impact of Dr. Mukwege’s medical contributions to survivors of conflict-related violence.
