Global air travel and freight demand show mixed regional trends

Global air travel and cargo demand showed growth in July, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Air passenger demand rose by 0.2%, while the air cargo sector saw a stronger increase of 3.9%. Regional performance varied significantly: European carriers saw a 3.1% increase in passenger growth, and traffic between Europe and Asia expanded by 12.1%. Conversely, North American carriers experienced a 2.3% year-on-year decrease in demand.

In the maritime sector, container freight indexes reported mixed regional trends in late August. Chinese export benchmarks, including the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), moved higher. Specifically, the SCFI increased approximately 2.9%. While Transpacific rates showed strength in some indexes, European and Mediterranean trade routes faced downward pressure, with some routes seeing declines in rates for shipments to Rotterdam and Genoa.
