Global airline capacity increases 1.6% in October 2026
Global airline capacity grew by 1.6% year-on-year in October 2026, according to market intelligence from OAG and CAPA. This expansion was primarily driven by significant seat additions in Northeast Asia and North America, which added 2.8 million and 2.5 million seats, respectively.
Regional performance showed significant divergence. Central and Western Africa recorded the highest percentage growth at 18.4%, followed by Central Asia and North Africa. In contrast, five regions experienced contractions, led by the Middle East with a 7.8% decrease.
In North America, Alaska Airlines saw a 23.5% surge in flight frequency following its integration with Hawaiian Airlines. Other major carriers like Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways also reported gains. However, several European legacy carriers, including Deutsche Lufthansa AG, British Airways, and Turkish Airlines, faced capacity reductions.
Despite the overall growth, industry analysts note that airlines are facing pressures from inflation, geopolitical uncertainty, and shifting consumer confidence. While aircraft deliveries are increasing, carriers are increasingly focused on capacity discipline to maintain profitability amidst uneven economic performance.
