Global Aquaculture Market Booms as IoT Tech Expands Offshore Fish Farming

IoT monitoring systems are transforming offshore aquaculture, with a market projected to rise from $1.28 billion in 2024 to $2.88 billion by 2033, a 9.2 % CAGR. Sensors and AI-driven analytics now track dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, fish biomass and behavior, enabling predictive disease detection, automated feeding and regulatory compliance.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization reports a record 188.2 million tonnes of total fish production in 2024, of which aquaculture contributed 103.3 million tonnes—surpassing capture fisheries for the first time. Aquaculture now supplies the majority of fish for human consumption, supports the livelihoods of roughly 600 million people worldwide and drives nutrition for vulnerable populations. However, rising ocean temperatures, acidification and intensive farming practices pose environmental and climate risks, prompting calls for stronger governance and adaptation measures.
