Global avocado industry addresses El Niño risks and market growth

The global avocado industry is addressing production challenges and market expansion through various regional initiatives. In Tanzania, the Cereal and Other Produce Regulatory Authority (COPRA) will host the 3rd National Avocado Forum in Dodoma on October 6, 2026. The forum aims to unite public and private stakeholders to enhance production, value addition, and market access for Tanzanian avocados.

At the Avocado Congress 2026 in Madrid, industry leaders discussed the impact of El Niño on global supplies. In Peru, ProHass is preparing for a potentially severe El Niño, noting that previous patterns caused a 10% drop in volumes. Colombia is projecting a 30% decrease in exports this year compared to 2025, with potential fruit size reductions due to weather patterns. Meanwhile, South African producers report good flowering and fruit set, though extreme heat remains a risk for fruit drop. Logistics improvements, such as the new Puerto Antioquia in Colombia, are also being leveraged to reduce transit times.
