Battery storage demand surges amid energy transition and grid challenges
Global demand for battery storage is surging as nations transition to renewable energy and electricity use rises due to data centers and electrification.
In Australia, residential batteries are becoming a central tool for energy transition. With approximately 4.5 million households having installed solar panels, the government is implementing a 5 billion Australian dollar subsidy program to support storage. The government aims to increase the number of residential batteries from 600,000 to 2 million by 2030. To manage market overheating, subsidy structures are being revised to favor smaller capacity systems.
In the United States, the rapid growth in battery demand is facing significant infrastructure bottlenecks. While falling prices make storage more attractive, aging grids and shortages of equipment like transformers and circuit breakers are delaying connections. In New York, Consolidated Edison reported a 300% increase in battery storage projects waiting for interconnection over two years. Nationwide, approximately 750 gigawatts of energy storage projects are currently in interconnection queues, with median waiting times increasing from 1.5 years in 2015 to five years in 2025.
