Global Bee Decline Driven by Habitat Loss and Pesticide Use
Bee populations worldwide are facing a steep decline due to a combination of habitat loss, fragmentation, and intensive agriculture that increase exposure to harmful pesticides, especially neonicotinoids. These stressors weaken colonies, making them more susceptible to diseases and parasites, and contribute to the phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). The shift after World War II toward monoculture farming reduced floral diversity, forcing large‑scale farms to transport managed bees fed high‑fructose corn syrup derived from GMO corn, further compromising bee immunity.
Bees are essential pollinators for many fruit, vegetable, and nut crops; their loss threatens global food production and biodiversity. Conservation efforts focus on restoring diverse habitats, reducing pesticide reliance, and promoting farming practices that support wild and managed bee health.
