Global Biodiversity Alliance meets in Guyana to secure nature financing

The Global Biodiversity Alliance (GBA) is convening its second conference in Georgetown, Guyana, to transition from pledges to tangible financial commitments for conservation. Under the theme “Investing in Nature: Accelerating Biodiversity Finance for Sustainable Development,” the two-day event brings together over 140 members, including governments, financial institutions, the United Nations, and private sector actors.

Launched in July 2025 by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali with 17 founding members, the coalition has expanded rapidly. Recent additions include the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago, with India expected to join. The conference aims to establish investment mechanisms and public policies necessary to fund conservation in biodiversity-rich nations.

Guyana is positioning itself as a global model for forest conservation and carbon credit management. The country previously earned US$227 million in results-based payments from Norway and recently became the first to issue jurisdictional forest carbon credits under the ART-TREES standard, securing an agreement worth at least US$750 million.
