Global Biofuel Demand Rises as Energy Security Concerns Grow
Filtration technology is becoming increasingly critical for modern biofuel plants as producers shift to more complex feedstocks such as used cooking oil, animal fats, waste-derived materials and algae. Advanced filters must handle higher solid loads and viscosities while maintaining throughput, reducing fouling and minimizing maintenance, thereby protecting downstream equipment, improving yields and cutting operating costs. Sustainability pressures also drive the selection of filtration systems that lower water and chemical use.
Morningstar DBRS projects a 30% increase in global biofuel consumption this year, citing higher oil prices, geopolitical shocks—including Iran‑related shipping constraints in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea—and expanding blending mandates. While the United States remains the largest market, demand growth is expected to be led by emerging economies in the Asia‑Pacific, India, Brazil and Indonesia. Major oil majors such as ExxonMobil, bp, Chevron, Shell, TotalEnergies and Eni have over 40 biofuel projects slated through 2030. The sector still faces structural challenges like feedstock availability, land‑use competition and sensitivity to oil‑price fluctuations.
