Blueberry production reaches 2.33 million tonnes amid global expansion

Global blueberry production reached 2.33 million tonnes in 2025, marking an 11.2% year-on-year increase. According to the International Blueberry Organization (IBO), production is projected to exceed 3.36 million tonnes by 2029. This growth is supported by an expansion in cultivated area, which reached 303,076 hectares in 2025.

Global fresh blueberry imports rose by 13.2% to approximately 1.1 million tonnes, with the average import price moderating to roughly USD 6.64 per kg. Approximately 77% of global production is destined for the fresh market, while 23% is used for processing. The IBO notes significant price differences between standard and premium varieties, with standard fruit prices being up to 42% lower than premium varieties in certain markets.

Regional highlights include Peru, which is a major player with an estimated 2025/26 production of 407,800 tonnes. In the Asia-Pacific region, growth is expected to be driven largely by China, where production could rise from 753,000 tonnes in 2025 to over 1.2 million tonnes by 2029. To support this expansion, companies like Fall Creek are introducing genetic varieties designed to adapt to different chilling requirements and harvest windows in new growing regions.
