Global blueberry production surges amid rising competition

Global blueberry production is experiencing significant growth, with the International Blueberry Organization estimating production reached 2.33 million tonnes in 2025, potentially exceeding 3.36 million tonnes by 2029. This surge is driven by new plantations reaching maturity, particularly in regions like Peru, which produced approximately 407,800 tonnes in the 2025/26 season. China and other Asia-Pacific nations are also increasing their roles in the global supply chain.

This rising supply is creating competitive pressure on regional producers. In Germany, domestic cultivation only accounted for about 17,000 tonnes in 2025, meaning approximately 80 percent of the fruit consumed is imported. Poland, a significant producer, faces challenges due to a fragmented farming structure where the average farm size is only 1.4 hectares, making it difficult to invest in automation and cooling technology. To remain profitable, producers are shifting focus from increasing volume to ensuring fruit quality, such as firmness, taste, and shelf life, to meet retailer demands.
