Global business confidence faces pressure amid austerity and economic caution

Business confidence is facing downward pressure in both South Africa and the United States due to differing economic factors.

In South Africa, economists warn that austerity measures—specifically spending cuts in education, healthcare, and infrastructure—are stifling business confidence. Experts suggest that without increased government investment in critical sectors, attracting foreign investment will remain difficult. The country is currently awaiting second-quarter GDP results from Statistics South Africa to assess economic performance between April and June.

In the United States, the latest CEO Confidence Index shows a decline in sentiment. In September, CEOs rated current business conditions at 5.6 out of 10, a 6 percent drop from August. This decline is attributed to increased caution regarding current conditions, with some leaders citing the impact of Middle East conflicts on consumer spending. While the 12-month outlook remains slightly more optimistic than current assessments, middle-market companies with annual revenues between $10 million and $24.9 million are showing higher levels of concern regarding future deterioration.
