Global cancer burden rises with significant regional disparities
The global cancer burden is rising significantly, with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimating 20.6 million new cases and 9.8 million deaths in 2024. Projections suggest that without improved prevention and treatment, annual new cases could reach 34 million by 2050, with deaths climbing to 17.5 million.
Data reveals stark geographical inequalities. China accounts for approximately one-quarter of global cancer cases and deaths. While Europe represents only 9.2% of the world population, it contributes over 20% of global cancer incidence. High incidence rates are noted in Australia and Denmark, while mortality rates are particularly high in Eastern Europe and Melanesia.
Specific trends in ovarian cancer show a divergence between regions. While incidence and mortality rates have declined globally from 1990 to 2021, high-income nations such as the United States, Austria, and Norway have seen falling rates, whereas parts of Asia and Africa are experiencing increases. In India, survival rates for ovarian cancer remain below 20%. Research highlights modifiable risk factors, noting that factors such as breastfeeding and reproductive history can influence risk levels.
