Global Catholic priest numbers rise for first time in five years

According to statistics from the Vatican agency Fides, the global number of Catholic priests has increased for the first time in five years. The total number of priests rose from 406,996 to 407,421, an increase of 425 compared to the previous year.

Regional data shows significant disparities in growth. Africa recorded the largest increase with 1,676 additional priests, followed by Asia with 1,065. The Americas also saw growth, adding 199 priests. Conversely, Europe experienced a decline of 2,483 priests, while Oceania saw a reduction of 32.

The increase was driven by diocesan priests, who rose to 279,238, while the number of priests from religious orders fell by 71 to 128,183. Despite the rise in clergy, the ratio of Catholics per priest increased to 3,491.

The global Catholic population also grew, reaching approximately 1.42 billion people, an increase of 16.69 million over the previous year. This represents 17.8% of the world population. Africa led this demographic growth with 7.58 million new believers, followed by the Americas with nearly 7 million.
