Global cities implement new regulations to manage e-scooter safety

RCMP Sergeant Andrew Baylis noted that e-scooters are increasingly used for transportation by youth, prompting initiatives to work with school districts on safety regulations. In Cape Town, South Africa, the Sea Point Promenade has implemented a new 8km/h speed limit for e-scooters to protect pedestrians. The new Promenade Management Protocol grants pedestrians the right of way and prohibits racing, weaving through crowds, or riding on grass. These measures follow incidents involving pedestrians, including a child, and aim to ensure the safety of children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Some residents have expressed skepticism regarding the enforceability of the low speed limit.
