Global climate finance faces rising costs and unmet targets
Global climate finance efforts face significant challenges as international temperature targets become increasingly difficult to meet. A United Nations report indicates that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C is now out of reach, with a 1.8°C increase being the more likely best-case scenario.
Since 2020, approximately $9 trillion has been dedicated to climate change efforts. However, the Climate Policy Initiative estimates that an average of $7.8 trillion per year will be required through 2030 to stay on a proper mitigation trajectory, effectively tripling the necessary annual investment.
In the private sector, the investment platform Team for the Planet (formerly Time for the Planet) reports it has mobilized 47 million euros toward its goal of reaching 1 billion euros by 2030. Including club deals, the organization has mobilized over 60 million euros. The company is currently working to internationalize its operations across ten countries to attract more shareholders.
