Global Climate Study Warns of Accelerating Warming and Rising Sea Levels

A new international assessment compiled by more than 70 climate scientists from 17 countries updates 12 key climate indicators. The report finds that by 2025 the planet has warmed 1.39 °C above pre‑industrial levels, with 1.37 °C attributed to human activity, and the rate of anthropogenic warming has reached a record 0.27 °C per decade. Sea level has risen 23 cm between 1901 and 2025, and the yearly rise has doubled to 3.84 mm, while marine heat‑wave days have increased to 65 per year.

Peter Thorne of Maynooth University emphasized that “these indicators are essential for tracking the health of a planet whose symptoms are becoming increasingly alarming.” Valérie Masson‑Delmotte warned that vital climate‑monitoring systems are under financial and political threat, jeopardising the data streams needed to track these changes. The authors conclude that, at the current trajectory, the 1.5 °C limit of the Paris Agreement could be breached around 2030.
