Global coffee demand rises amid environmental and supply pressures

On the occasion of International Coffee Day, the CollectifCafé is encouraging consumers to shift toward drinking less but higher-quality coffee to protect land, producers, and environmental stability.

Global coffee consumption has increased by nearly 90% over the last 30 years, according to the International Coffee Organization. This surge in demand, particularly in countries like India, China, and South Korea, is placing significant pressure on cultivation methods, land resources, and the number of active producers. The industry faces growing challenges from climate change, deforestation, and harvest pressures.

In France, where 80% of the population consumes coffee regularly, most purchases are made through large-scale retail and are driven by price rather than origin, traceability, or quality. Experts note that most 'commodity' coffees lack information regarding their production conditions and composition.
