Colombia faces supply challenges in shifting global coffee market

Global coffee discussions are shifting from stimulating demand to ensuring supply, according to reports from recent annual meetings of the International Coffee Organization (OIC), the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), and the SCTA. The industry faces a new economic era where producing high-quality coffee is becoming increasingly difficult due to climate change, rising production costs, labor shortages, and stricter regulatory requirements.

While global demand is evolving—with younger consumers seeking authenticity, quality, and diverse flavor profiles—the ability to meet these expectations is threatened by environmental and economic volatility. Colombia is positioned as a significant opportunity for high-quality Arabica production, provided the country can accelerate technological integration and develop more resilient coffee varieties through institutions like Cenicafé.

Experts emphasize that economic sustainability for producers is a prerequisite for environmental sustainability. To succeed, the industry must move beyond pilot projects toward large-scale investment in science, innovation, and sustainable practices to secure the future of the global coffee supply.
