Global economy faces persistent inflation and rising energy costs

Economists are warning of sustained global inflation through 2027, driven largely by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising energy costs. A Reuters survey of over 500 economists revealed that inflation forecasts for 2027 have been revised upward in 31 of 50 surveyed economies. While global economic growth remains resilient, with projections for 2026 and 2027 at 3% and 3.2% respectively, the combination of growth and high prices presents a complex challenge for central banks.

Energy markets are under significant pressure. Crude oil prices have remained above $100 per barrel since early October, recently exceeding $117. The World Bank has increased its energy price forecast for this year to a 32% rise, up from a previous estimate of 24%. In Europe, disruptions in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies could drive gas prices up by nearly 60% this year.

Other sectors are also facing volatility. Coffee stocks have reached near 27-year lows, exacerbated by a 15% drop in Colombian production for the 2025/26 season. Additionally, major consumer goods companies, including Nestlé and Coca-Cola, have warned that rising logistics and raw material costs may lead to further price increases for households.
