Global communities observe International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day

Communities across Australia and the United States are observing International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day through ceremonies and memorial events.

In Australia, the National Association for Loss and Grief (NALAG) is hosting a Remembering Ceremony in Dubbo. NALAG reports that recent data indicates significant perinatal mortality rates, with stillbirths at 8.7 per 1,000 births and neonatal deaths at 2.4 per 1,000 live births. The organization highlighted that approximately 30 to 37 percent of Australian women who have been pregnant have experienced at least one miscarriage, noting the need for greater recognition and support for grieving families.

In Pocatello, Idaho, Portneuf Health is organizing a Wave of Light event at the Portneuf Wellness Complex. Participants decorate lanterns to be lit at 7 p.m. to honor lost loved ones, a tradition observed globally. The event is part of a community support effort led by local nursing staff to ensure families navigating perinatal bereavement do not feel isolated.
