Global cooling initiatives launch amid rising heat-related productivity losses

New research published in Nature Climate Change highlights the economic impact of rising temperatures on labor productivity. The study estimates that in 2025, every additional ton of CO2 emitted is associated with approximately $41 in lost labor productivity due to heat stress. The financial burden is particularly heavy in countries with high heat and humidity exposure, with India facing an estimated $9 loss per ton of CO2, followed by Nigeria at $6, China at $4, and Pakistan at $3.

In response to escalating heat risks, the Global Cooling Pledge Assembly 2026 in Singapore announced several initiatives to promote sustainable cooling and heat resilience. These include the inaugural Cool Leaders awards, a Heat Resilience Roadmap, and a Nature for Cooling Challenge. The measures aim to address the projected surge in air conditioning demand, which is expected to reach 5.6 billion units by 2050.

Recognizing leadership in the sector, the Cool Leaders awards honored Singapore for passive cooling, the United Arab Emirates for district cooling, and Dong Mingzhu of Gree Electric Appliances for advancing ultra-efficient, low-carbon cooling technologies.
