Global Cybersecurity Threats Persist: Weak Passwords and AI‑Generated Phishing
Reports from NordPass and Comparitech show that the six‑digit sequence “123456” remains the most used password worldwide, topping lists across all ages, education levels and regions. The data reveal that numeric‑only passwords account for about 25 % of the top 1,000 most common passwords, and security experts warn that such simple strings can be cracked in under a second. A study cited by Verizon indicates that weak or reused passwords are responsible for roughly 70 % of corporate data‑breach incidents.
A separate analysis by Any.run highlights a shift in phishing tactics: modern campaigns no longer rely on malicious attachments or executable malware. Of the 159,592 phishing campaigns examined, about 42 % employ AI‑generated “AiTM” kits that can hijack active sessions, bypass multi‑factor authentication and operate entirely within legitimate‑looking browser sessions, leaving no detectable malware footprints.
