Italy faces energy challenges from data centers and consumer shifts
Italy is navigating significant shifts in energy demand and consumer behavior. According to the School of Management at Politecnico di Milano, global data center capacity has nearly doubled in five years, reaching 114 GW by the end of 2025. This growth places immense pressure on electrical grids. In Italy, Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin warned that data center electricity consumption could reach between 15 and 30 terawatt-hours annually by 2035, potentially accounting for 10% of the nation's total requirement. He emphasized the need for grid modernization and new regulations for infrastructure authorization.
Simultaneously, Italian consumer habits are evolving due to rising energy costs. An Edison-Censis observatory report indicates that 67% of Italians prioritize energy stability over price savings to avoid sudden spikes. In the retail sector, Barbara Bax of MediaWorld noted that sustainability and energy efficiency are becoming primary drivers for appliance purchases, with 79% of consumers considering energy labels. Consumers are increasingly looking beyond initial costs to evaluate long-term management expenses, water consumption, and product durability.
