Global dividends reach record 881 billion dollars in Q2 2026

Global dividend distributions reached a record 881 billion dollars (approximately 755.3 billion euros) in the second quarter of 2026, marking an 8% increase compared to the same period the previous year, according to data from Vanguard.

Europe, including the United Kingdom, accounted for the largest portion of this growth, distributing 323 billion dollars in dividends. Within continental Europe, financial services saw a 6% year-on-year increase. In contrast, the automotive and luxury goods sectors saw dividends remain flat or decrease, a trend attributed to weak consumer demand in China and intensified competition.

In the United Kingdom, dividends from financial, materials, consumer staples, and energy companies grew by 12% year-on-year. Meanwhile, emerging markets (excluding China) saw a 16.2% increase, reaching 144 billion dollars.

A significant shift is occurring as the technology sector begins to challenge traditional dividend leaders like banking, insurance, and energy. While these sectors have historically been the primary sources of periodic income for investors, large U.S. technology companies are increasingly returning capital to shareholders due to robust cash flows and solid balance sheets.
