Global economic shifts: Carney pushes for multipolar currency system while Japan faces fiscal scrutiny

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has advocated for a transition toward a multipolar global financial system to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar. Speaking to The New York Times, Carney argued that the current reliance on a single reserve currency is unsustainable, particularly as Washington utilizes trade policies and tariffs as tools for economic coercion. This stance follows a breakdown in Canada-U.S. relations characterized by collapsed trade talks and retaliatory tariffs between Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Carney has previously proposed the use of a Synthetic Hegemonic Currency (SHC)—a digital reserve asset managed by a coalition of central banks—to reshape global architecture. His administration has already moved toward diversification by signing a bilateral currency swap with Beijing.

In Japan, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is facing scrutiny over fiscal policy as the country manages a significant budget deficit and high public debt. Takaichi is expected to address parliament to defend her expansionary fiscal plans, which include large-scale investment projects and proposed consumption tax cuts. Analysts express concern regarding how these initiatives will be funded, given that Japan’s public debt is approximately twice the size of its economy. The uncertainty surrounding Japan’s fiscal direction and bond issuance caps is contributing to global bond market volatility.
