Global economic stability challenged by interest rates and energy costs

Global and regional economic outlooks face challenges from rising interest rates and volatile energy prices. Central banks are navigating a difficult path, attempting to tighten monetary conditions to control inflation without triggering recessions. While some sectors, such as AI-related investment, show resilience to financing costs, there is a risk that central banks may need to maintain higher interest rates for longer periods if traditional transmission channels weaken.

In India, the World Bank has upgraded its growth projection for the current fiscal year to 7.1%, up from 6.6%, driven by strong domestic demand and exports. Despite this, the Reserve Bank of India has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to address mounting price pressures and core inflation. The economy remains vulnerable to external shocks, particularly as crude oil prices approach $100 per barrel and the rupee depreciates against the dollar. Experts suggest that sustaining growth will require strategic investments in physical and digital infrastructure alongside managing the risks of supply disruptions and geopolitical shifts.
