Global economy faces commodity spiral amid geopolitical conflicts
The global economy is facing four simultaneous shocks that are driving a commodity spiral and creating significant inflationary pressure, according to analysis by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard.
Key drivers include the ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, which are convulsing interlinked petroleum, gas, and grain markets. The Bloomberg commodity index has risen 48 per cent this year, with costs spreading from energy to industrial metals and grains. Shipping costs have also seen unprecedented increases, with the daily cost of a giant VLCC oil tanker reaching $1 million.
Financial markets are reacting to these instabilities. Yields on 10-year US Treasuries have surpassed 5 per cent, and Brent crude prices have been pushed to $108. The futures markets are no longer pricing in a quick return to normalcy, as Brent futures contracts remain high through the spring of 2027 and European gas futures are significantly elevated compared to previous winters.
