Global efforts advance reparatory justice in Caribbean and The Gambia

The Third CARICOM Regional Conference on Reparations is scheduled to take place in Barbados from September 17-19, 2026. Hosted by the CARICOM Reparations Commission, the Government of Barbados, and the CARICOM Secretariat, the event will focus on the theme “Reparatory Justice as the Coming Enlightenment.” The conference aims to provide practical guidance for implementing the revised CARICOM Ten-Point Plan for Reparatory Justice and will address emerging perspectives from African and Caribbean political discourse.

In The Gambia, a nationwide training program will be conducted from September 14-20, 2026, to support approximately 300 women victims. Organized by The Gambia Reparations Commission in partnership with the International Center for Transitional Justice and the Alliance of Victim-Led Organizations, the initiative seeks to improve understanding of rights and access to gender-sensitive reparations. The program will span several regions, including the West Coast, North Bank, Lower River, Central River, and Upper River Regions, utilizing local languages and storytelling to identify barriers to the reparations process.
