Global efforts focus on prisoner reintegration and recidivism reduction

Efforts to improve social reintegration for incarcerated individuals are being highlighted through various regional initiatives in Spain and Chile.

In Granada, Spain, Proyecto Hombre Granada and Penitentiary Institutions held a conference titled “Castigar o integrar” (Punish or integrate). The event focused on addiction treatment, dual pathology, and the necessity of building alliances between public institutions and social entities to create sustainable reintegration paths. Data presented indicated that 80% of inmates in Spain do not reoffend, with recidivism rates dropping by 50% over the last 12 years.

In Peumo, Chile, approximately 80 inmates at the Centro de Detención Preventiva (CDP) are participating in sports and cultural activities. Managed by Gendarmería de Chile with support from the National Sports Institute and Fundación PEHUEN, the program includes football, table tennis, and rugby. Officials noted that these activities are essential for developing personal skills, promoting positive behavior, and maintaining order within the facility to reduce conflict and recidivism.
