Electric vehicle sales surge globally as commercial and passenger adoption accelerates
Global electric vehicle (EV) adoption is accelerating across multiple sectors. In 2025, sales of electric trucks and buses nearly doubled, reaching approximately 500,000 units, an 86 percent increase from the previous year. China dominated this segment, accounting for nearly 90 percent of these global sales. Electric buses now represent 17 percent of all global bus sales.
In passenger vehicle markets, trends vary by region. In Australia, battery-powered EV sales have surged, representing over 23 percent of the new car market in the first half of 2026. In the UK, electrified vehicles (electric and hybrid) accounted for 63.3 percent of leasing enquiries between May and July 2026, with the Vauxhall Frontera being the most popular electric model. Germany is also seeing a rise in BEV registrations, though domestic manufacturers are facing increased competition from Chinese brands.
Analysts at Wood Mackenzie suggest that global EV share of the passenger fleet could rise from 4 percent to 25 percent by 2040, with a high-case ‘electric shock’ scenario potentially pushing adoption even higher. However, significant challenges remain, including the need for massive investment in charging infrastructure and achieving cost parity with diesel vehicles.
