Global Encryption Day highlights threats to digital privacy

In observance of Global Encryption Day on October 21, advocates are calling for the protection of encryption technologies against government demands for “lawful access.” Encryption is essential for securing banking transactions, medical records, business secrets, and personal communications.

End-to-end encryption, utilized by services such as Signal, ensures that only the communicating parties can read messages, preventing even service providers from accessing content. This technology serves as a critical tool for journalists communicating with whistleblowers, individuals fleeing violence, and political dissidents or religious minorities living under authoritarian regimes.

Critics of government intervention argue that demands for backdoors or special keys to encrypted data compromise the security of all users, comparing such requirements to forcing locksmiths to provide duplicate keys to every residence.
