Global energy and food prices rise amid geopolitical tensions

Global energy and food markets are facing significant upward pressure due to geopolitical tensions and environmental factors. Brent crude oil prices have risen to approximately $109.60 per barrel, driven by instability in the Middle East and concerns regarding tanker transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries are complicating fuel supplies.

Natural gas prices on the TTF exchange have surpassed the $1,000 threshold per thousand cubic meters, exceeding previous expert forecasts. European gas reserves remain lower than in previous years, and the region faces competition for liquefied natural gas from Asia and South America. Coal prices in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp hub have also seen increases.

Beyond energy, food security is threatened by logistical and agricultural challenges. Conflict in the Black Sea has significantly impacted grain exports from Russia and Ukraine, which together account for a vast majority of regional wheat, corn, and barley shipments. Extreme weather, including droughts and heatwaves, has further impacted crop yields. In Europe, low water levels in the Rhine have hindered river transport, while water shortages in Hungary have limited the output of nuclear power plants used for cooling.
