Global energy markets face volatility as oil prices surge amid geopolitical risks
Global energy markets are experiencing significant volatility driven by geopolitical tensions and shifting supply-demand dynamics. Brent crude prices surged by 6.71% in a single week to reach 107.05 dollars per barrel, while WTI rose by 4.95% to 93.86 dollars. These increases are largely attributed to heightened risks in the Middle East and uncertainties regarding energy flows.
At the WPC Energy 2026 congress in Riyadh, Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab warned of insufficient investments in the sector. He emphasized that despite energy transitions, global demand for oil and gas is projected to rise due to population growth, urbanization, and industrialization, particularly in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
In response to global supply tightness, the G7 has agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel from strategic petroleum reserves over a four-month period. Meanwhile, seven major OPEC+ members, including Saudi Arabia and Russia, have decided to maintain current production levels for November 2026. In the natural gas market, prices rose by 2.27% to 3.14 dollars per MMBtu, supported by winter consumption outlooks.
