Global environmental trends: China's green exports and Italy's plastic recycling gains

China's green technology exports are significantly contributing to global emission reductions. In 2025, equipment exported from China is estimated to have prevented 374 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. To put this in perspective, the amount of CO2 avoided by these products exceeds the total annual carbon emissions produced by France.

While China remains the world's largest polluter, the environmental benefits of its clean energy technologies are often recorded in the countries that use them rather than in the country of origin. This creates a complex climate profile where the nation acts as both a major emitter and a primary provider of global decarbonization tools.

In Italy, the CONIP National Consortium for Plastic Packaging reported a 75.42% recycling rate for plastic crates in 2025, an increase of 2.5 percentage points from the previous year. This performance exceeds the European Union's 2030 target of 55% recycling for plastic packaging. Despite market challenges, such as low virgin plastic prices and competition from cheaper recycled materials from non-EU countries, the consortium generated approximately 55,865 tons of secondary raw material.
