US Stock Rally and Fund Flows Boosted by Weak July Jobs Report
U.S. equity markets rose on Friday after a surprisingly weak July jobs report showed a loss of 23,000 jobs and unemployment holding near 4.1%. The S&P 500 gained about 0.5% near a record high, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed roughly 1%, while Treasury yields fell, easing expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September.
Investors responded by moving money between asset classes. Global equity funds recorded a net inflow of $21.15 billion for the week, the 11th consecutive week of net purchases, driven by strong earnings from companies such as Amazon, Caterpillar and Palantir and a cooling of crude‑oil prices. By contrast, U.S. equity funds saw net outflows of $1.58 billion as investors took profits ahead of the jobs data, while money‑market funds attracted $55.7 billion of new cash. Bond funds also received net inflows, with U.S. bond funds adding $6.5 billion.
Market‑based odds indicated that the Fed is no longer projected to raise rates at its September meeting, although the Fed chair warned a hike could still occur if inflation remains high. The combination of weaker labor data, easing rate‑hike expectations, and solid corporate earnings has lifted risk‑asset sentiment across both U.S. and global markets.
